BIOGRAPHIES

Ronald Stevenson is a living legend. His music has been admired by figures as diverse and distinguished as Sibelius, Britten, Menhuin, Alan Bush and Edward Gordon Craig. In addition to over 500 piano compositions and 100 songs, Stevenson has composed two piano concertos, concertos for violin and cello, and an epic Ben Dorain work for double chorus and symphony orchestra which received its world premiere this January in Glasgow with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Stevenson’s phenomenal pianism has been captured in a series of CDs on the Altarus Label.

His published writings included a History of Western Music and many articles for The Listener. Broadcasts on television and radio include documentaries on Ferruccio Busoni and Percy Grainger. In his 80th year, Stevenson’s extraordinary creativity is celebrated at St. John’s in a weekend of concerts that present some of his most illuminating compositions, including his monumental Passacagia on DSCH for piano, a work which was deeply admired by Walton, Wilfred Mellers, John Ogdon and Sorabji.
