Marie-Louise Taylor studied piano at the Royal Academy of Music from 1983-1987 gaining her GRSM Hons degree, an LRAM Teaching Diploma, an RAM Advanced Performance Certificate and prizes for performances in the Chopin and Liszt Piano Competitions and the Vivian Langrish Memorial Prize.
In 1986 she obtained a Distinction for her Recital Diploma (ABSM) given in the newly opened Adrian Boult Hall, Birmingham. She was a finalist and prizewinner in the Redditch National Piano competition in 1988.
Her teachers have included her father Harold Taylor (a student of Cortot) Allan Schiller, Ruth Harte, Orsoyla Sabot and Piers Lane.
A scholarship in 1992 led to a year in Hungary studying accompaniment with Roland Hadju from the Liszt Academy in Budapest and intensive studies in solfege musicology and methodology at the Kodaly Institute of Music in Kesckemet. She completed her studies with ‘Outstanding’ in both piano and chamber music.
Marie-Louise has played in solo and chamber music recitals abroad and nationwide.
She has performed in London’s Wigmore Hall; Royal Holloway College; Reading Arts Centre; Warwick Arts Centre; the Adrian Boult Hall; Sir Geraint Evans Hall, Cardiff; Royal Worcester Grammar School; Shrewsbury Arts Centre; for Knighton Music Club; the Tenby Festival and the Liszt Society amongst many others.
Her diverse activities as a pianist have ranged from formal solo recitals and quintet and trio recitals to a duo with guitarist John Mills. She has also been a vocal coach at the Welsh College of Music and Drama and an accompanist for the Birmingham Conservatoire.
Marie-Louise is rapidly establishing herself as a piano teacher with a highly distinctive and successful teaching style. Her father, Harold Taylor, author of the acclaimed book ‘The Pianist’s Talent’ first led to her interest in the ‘Alexander Technique’ and Marie-Louise has now attended dozens of seminars and workshops as both pupil and trainee teacher of the Alexander Technique under the direction of Dr Don Weed, founder of the ITMA.
Marie-Louise is currently on the piano teaching staff at Birmingham University, the RNCM Junior School and Chetham’s School of Music.
She taught piano for the Welsh College of Music and Drama from 1994-2002 and for the Birmingham Conservatoire until 2003.
